Coconut Sugar – a Healthy Alternative?

Most people want to reduce their sugar consumption and there is growing interest in alternatives, one of which is coconut sugar. It is derived from the coconut palm tree, has a lower glycemic index and is said to be more nutritious than ordinary sugar.

Coconut sugar is made from sap that is heated until most of the water evaporates. While ordinary sugar and fructose corn syrup only contain ‘empty calories’ coconut sugar does retain some nutrients. These include iron, potassium, calcium and antioxidants and polyphenols. It also contains inulin, a fibre that may help slow glucose absorption, hence the potentially lower glycemic index.

Despite this, you would need to eat enormous quantities of coconut sugar to obtain any nutritional benefit and it is still very high in calories. Additionally, coconut sugar is still high in fructose and when consumed in excess could cause all sorts of health problems. Just like any form of sugar, it is best consumed in moderation.
