Three Tips for a Tooth-Friendly Halloween

Halloween is fun but can wreak havoc on young teeth. Follow our tips for making your celebrations a little more tooth-friendly.

  1. Choose Wisely. When your children get back from trick or treating, remove the treats that are worst for teeth including hard caramels and sticky treats. Softer treats like chocolate dissolve more quickly, doing less harm to teeth.
  2. Set Limits. Don’t let your child snack on their treats all day. Instead, it is better to include sweet treats as part of the main meal. Let them have a set number of treats each day for a few days after Halloween before donating the rest.
  3. Wait Before Brushing. Wait at least thirty minutes before brushing because the mouth is more acidic after eating and if your child brushes now, they will cause more damage to their teeth. Instead, get them to rinse with water which will wash away excess food and helps pH levels to normalise more quickly.

Try to make your Halloween celebrations more about spending time with friends and family and doing fun activities together, rather than indulging in sweet treats.
