How to Protect Your Holiday Smile

Ensure your teeth remain strong and healthy over Christmas with our simple tips.

Avoid Using Your Teeth as Tools

We know you want to get into your presents quickly but resist the urge to tear off wrapping paper or to open packages with your teeth. Using your teeth as tools can weaken tooth enamel, increasing the risk of chips and cracks.

Don’t Graze on Sweet Goodies

Sweet treats abound at this time of year but resist the temptation to graze on sugary foods, and especially sticky treats like dried fruit that can stick to teeth for hours. The longer your teeth are coated with sugar, the greater the damage as the sugar feeds harmful bacteria in your mouth. If you can, eat crunchy veggies with hummus or yoghurt-based dips instead, or best of all, choose cheese that is packed with tooth strengthening calcium.

Drink More Water

Drinking water helps to neutralise harmful acids in the mouth. Also, if you drink alcohol, it is naturally drying, so sip frequently from a big refillable water bottle.

Stick to Your Oral Care Routine

Regular schedules can fall by the wayside but make sure your brushing and flossing routine isn’t affected. It only takes a few minutes to brush twice a day and to floss once a day.
