Sink Your Teeth into the New Year-How to Kick Start Your Oral Health This Year

Good dental health is essential for good overall health, and the New Year is a great time to think about ways to overhaul oral health habits. As with any resolution, consistency is key.

Improving Your Toothbrushing and Flossing Habits

One easy and simple way to improve oral health is to make sure your tooth brushing and flossing habits are up to scratch. It’s crucial to brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove bacterial plaque successfully with fluoride toothpaste and using a soft-bristled toothbrush. It’s up to you whether you choose a manual or electric toothbrush as effective cleaning is largely down to technique.

When you brush, make sure the toothbrush bristles are at a 45° angle towards your gum line where food debris and plaque tend to build up. Floss once-a-day to help prevent gum disease. It’s your choice whether you floss in the morning or night, so pick a time that is easiest to maintain. If you like to use mouthwash, choose one that is antimicrobial and which preferably contains fluoride.

Make Healthier Food and Beverage Choices

Another easy way to kickstart your oral health this year is to make healthier food and drink choices and especially when snacking. Frequently consuming foods that are high in carbohydrates and acid increases the risk of tooth decay. If you do have a snack, make sure you brush afterwards.
